Yesterday, I saw The Last Airbender. The movie that everyone's hyped up about. Even I was excited to see it. But once I had, I was majorly disappointed and wondered what I ever saw in the movie.
First off, the movie was too rushed. One minute they had just saved Aang from the iceberg. Next minute, Aang wakes up and the Fire Nation attack two minutes later. He immediately agrees to be their prisoner without putting up a fight at all. He escapes way too soon and too quickly. There isn't even a fight between him and Zuko on the ship, he just flies away. Then before you know it, they're already in an Earth Kingdom. Did I miss something? The thing is, since they only did Book 1, couldn't they have taken it slower? It would be a little different if they jammed the 3 books together, but they only did 1.
When Katara saved Aang from the iceberg, did anyone else notice that she didn't try very hard? She kinda just tapped it with the boomerang. In the cartoon, she pounded on it constantly. In the movie, she hit it two times. Aren't iceberg's supposedly thick? Wouldn't it take a little more work to break that thing open?
When he was saved, he was pretty much asleep. All of you know Aang as they hyper, high spirited kid that's always running around. In the movie, he always seemed depressed and tired. What happened to that ADHD-ness of his? Where's the Aang I know and who is this kid you replaced him with?
Another person they jacked up was Sokka. In the cartoon, he was always cracking jokes and was as playful as Aang. He always needed something to eat to top it off. In the The Last Airbender, he was all serious and I don't think I saw him eat once. In fact, I'm not sure anyone ate in the movie.
When the benders were, well, bending, they seemed pretty jerky. Like someone had taken pictures every two or three seconds and then just ran them together to make "animation". I don't know if anyone else thinks that, but that's what it looked like to me. The effects themselves were okay sometimes, but other times I could obviously tell they were fake.
The Avatar State. That's what kind of confused me. When he first entered the Avatar State, he rose up in the air all gracefully, like he was willingly going. But as the story goes, he's upset over the loss of his people and has no intention of going into the Avatar State. He should be curled up into a ball, or limp. Not straight and graceful. The other time he entered the State, during the final battle scene in the movie, all he did was make a giant wave. He only threatened the Fire Nation, he didn't actually do any harm. Which of course was disappointing. But I swear, at that part, I really wanted to scream "Brick" and see what happened.
Lastly, what was with the part where Zhao died? I mean, after Zuko and Iroh left, four random waterbenders came up and killed him in less than a minute. Then they just walked away. What was the point of that?
That's pretty much it. Now, I'm done ranting. I mean it had its good parts. The effects were pretty believable at times. As the movie progressed, they got a bit better. The way Yue died was pretty creative too. She actually had to go into the pond and when the life flowed out of her, her hair returned to black. That was pretty cool.
So that's it for my review. I don't recommend going to see it, but it's your choice.
